INTRODUCTION
Why Open Storage
Open Storage means storage solutions developed using open source software running on general purpose hardware components. In the server market, open source plays a large and viable role, fueled by the economics of reducing acquisition costs. The storage industry is currently starting a similar shift, especially in the converging NAS and SAN segments, long dominated by proprietary software.
A particularly inviting approach to developing open source storage solutions is to start with OpenSolaris and the storage community at OpenSolaris.org. Which brings us to....
Why OpenSolaris
ZFS- This major Solaris OpenSolaris and Solaris 10 innovation is changing the way storage is deployed and managed. The combination of data integrity, scalability, and simple management - all available at zero acquistion cost - is a compelling offering. The ZFS community is the most active of the OpenSolaris communities.
The Rest of the Portfolio- As an enterprise offering, Solaris and OpenSolaris have acquired significant storage technologies over the years. There's an in-kernel CIFS implementation, as well as Samba for OpenSolaris. Management tools that have been open sourced include Solaris Volume Manager and the Sun StorageTek Availability Suite. There are also multiple tape projects, device driver projects, and standards efforts. See the All Storage Components page for more details.
Enterprise Track Record- The reliability/scalability/quality of OpenSolaris ties directly to its predecessors, Solaris 8, 9, and 10. The success of those predecessors was defined by acceptance in enterprise data centers and storage offerings have always been a part of that success.
