OpenSolaris Apps of Steel Challenge
Overview
Sun Microsystems is happy to announce the OpenSolaris Apps of Steel Challenge. If you're a student, developer, system administrator, or someone who just likes to develop packages, use your talents and participate for a chance to win a Toshiba OpenSolaris laptop!
Participate in the Phase 2 of Apps of Steel Challege which begins in Summer 2009.
Submit the best package that meets the criteria within the stated time frame and win a Toshiba OpenSolaris Laptop.

How to Enter
- 1. Create your package
- 2. Make sure your package meets the necessary criteria
- 3. Login to SourceJuicer
- 4. Submit your package(s)*
- 5. Send an email to OpenSolarisAppsOfSteelContest@sun.com with the following information:

- a. Your contact details (name, email address, physical address, opensolaris.org user name, phone number and country of residence)
- b. Lists of packages submitted
- c. A short written description of the Entry, including the key points about the Entry's purpose and functionality, and an explanation of how the Entry has address the judging criteria.

Time Frame
| April 11, 2009 | Phase 1 of the Challenge Begins |
| May 8, 2009 | Phase 1 of the Challenge Ends |
| May 8-15, 2009 | Judges review entries |
| May 18, 2009 | Winners are determined and contacted |
| June 1, 2009 | Winners of Phase 1 of Challenge are announced at CommunityOne West in San Francisco, CA. |
| Summer 2009 | Phase 2 of Challenge kicks off. Phase 2 of the challenge would be focused on quality and quantity of packages submitted by a single individual. |
| February 2010 | Phase 2 of the Challenge Ends. |
| February 2010 | 2010 Winners of the Phase 2 of the Challenge are announced with the next release of OpenSolaris. |

How the Winning Entries Are Selected
A panel of judges will be determined to set criteria for each application and pick the winning applications. The judges on the team will consist of OpenSolaris engineers and members of the OpenSolaris Community.
Judging Criteria
All Entries will be judged by a panel of experts using the following point scale:
- • Complexity of the Port (1 point per 10 changed patch code lines, with 10 point limit);
- • Use of unique OpenSolaris features, such as ZFS, DTrace, SMF, and FMA (5 points per feature, with a 20 point limit);
- • Number of dependent packages ported (2 points per package, 20 point limit);
- • Usefulness to the end user (1-25 points).
The Entries with the highest point total will be declared the winners.
